Imagine this: your child has a seizure. Or falls from a height. Or accidentally swallows medicine. Do you know what to do before you reach a doctor?
Pediatric emergencies are every parent’s worst nightmare. But staying informed can make all the difference. Dr. Milind Jambagi, with decades of experience in pediatric emergency services and sick children retrieval, shares these essential, life-saving tips.
5 Emergency Scenarios and What to Do:
1. Seizures:
-
Turn the child on their side.
-
Do not put anything in the mouth or hands.
-
Time the seizure — if it lasts more than 5 minutes, seek immediate help at the nearest pediatric hospital.
2. High Fever (above 102°F):
-
Use a tepid cold sponge from head to toe.
-
Administer age-appropriate paracetamol dosage.
-
Watch for symptoms like lethargy, vomiting, or stiffness.
3. Poisoning/Accidental Ingestion of unwanted or unknown item:
-
Do not induce vomiting if not sure of the item ingested.
-
Preserve the packaging and take it with you to the hospital.
4. Head Injury:
-
Check consciousness and look for drowsiness, bleeding from any orifices
-
Avoid moving the neck if fallen from height.
-
Visit the nearest pediatric emergency department in the above cases
5. Breathing Difficulty:
-
Means child is breathless and unable to speak
-
Use prescribed inhalers if advised earlier for rescue.
-
Rush to pediatric ER without delay.
